ChALLENGE:

Football is for everyone, and as part of their drive for inclusivity, EE wanted to highlight the immense footballing talent in the deaf community. We were tasked by HAVAS PLAY & EE to create a film celebrating British Sign Language Day in Football. We needed to create an emotive film encouraging people to learn British Sign Language phrases.

APPROACH:

EE had organised a friendly game at Wembley Stadium between two deaf teams. Following a tour of the stadium, we shot our setup: Two team briefings from Lionesses Faye White & Sue Smith before kick off with BSL interpretation by Rolf Choutan & Damaris Cooke on the pitch.

We shot the film with a combination of handheld closeup footage to give us an intimate portrait of our players and establish an emotional connection with the audience. For the gameplay, we shot with long lenses on a gimbal to give the game a fast paced, intense, action-packed feel, entertaining our audience with a film which demonstrated the skills of the players and the thrill of being on the pitch at one of Britain’s most recognisable stadiums.

A tight post production schedule meant we had to deliver two social cuts of the film, 60s & 30s, in a one week turnaround with amendments from both HAVAS & EE.

OUTCOME:

The client was blown away by the end result. Our approach to the film and thought process behind the creative for the film exceeded their expectations, so much so that not only did the film perform well on EE’s social channels, but participants and influencers also wanted to share the film on their socials to highlight British Sign Language Day to their followers and beyond.
